Product Description
The great popularity of fantasy and science fiction themes in films, books, graphic novels, and computer games has created a continuing demand for artists who can conceptualize and draw convincing space ships of tomorrow, as well as other fantasy vehicles such as cars, tanks, and sea-going vessels of the future. In this book, artist and designer Keith Thompson presents a practical course for art students. He starts with advice on finding research and reference materials, and then advises on using them as inspiration before sketching out original ideas for finished illustrations. The book’s extensive main section presents a “mechanical workshop” of fantasy designs for students to copy and adapt to their own story needs and specifications. It gives attention to the techniques of drawing, shading, and coloring. The author analyzes each of the book’s fantasy vehicles in terms of how and why artists came to their final design, how well the vehicles fit into the story being told, and how they would move, sound, and perform. Clear instruction is supplemented with more than 400 vivid, step-by-step color illustrations of sample projects.

Reviews

Cool book.
I saw this at the book store and knew I had to get it. I recomend it.

Great variety of vehicles!
I was surprized by the great variety of vehicles. From boxy to sleak to biomorphic vehicles. Easy to follow step by step directions. From starting with basic box and rectangulars shapes. Then editing these shapes, and adding to these shapes, to create a vehicle. This book is for learning to drawing on paper but I will be using it to draw on the computer. I'm a media designer, I will use the techniques that I have learned from this book for my 2D art. That I create with photoshop and painter as well as my 3D work. The book is also great for coming up with ideas for vehicles. Great book for beginners!

50 fantasy vehicles
its an ok book..did have some unqiue ideas and ppictures of vehicles I would not have thought of..but I would use prob one, maybe two of the illustrated vehicles with my own modifications out of the whole book to put in a painting or drawing

A great "jumping-off point" for designing vehicles
When first saw the book sitting on the shelf I thought to myself "Is this another Lee J Ames Draw 50 books?" I opened it up, and I was surprised. The author begins with some reference on modern and historical vehicles, making them armored, military war machines. Also covered are steam-punk, future cars and motorcycles, one creature from myth, and animal-machine hybrids. The illustrations are very good, and the author break down the forms of the vehicles into three dimensional shapes, showing them from three or four angles.
