Product Description Written for those who are familiar with the basic strategies of analytic epidemiology, Epidemiology: Beyond the Basics takes readers through a more rigorous discussion of key epidemiologic concepts and methods such as study design, measures of association, research assessment, and more. With real-life examples throughout, the book avoids complex statistical formulations and is an invaluable resource for intermediate students and practicing epidemiologists who wish to expand their knowledge of epidemiology and its role in the medical and public health sciences. This thorough revision features end-of-chapter exercises as well an entirely new chapter devoted to issues related to the interface between epidemiology, health policy, and public health, such as Rothman’s causality model, proximal and distal causes, and Hill’s guidelines. Careful attention is also given to sensitivity analysis, meta-analysis, and publication bias.

The Service SUCKS!!!!! This book "Epidemiology Beyond the Basics" is a good book for persons wanting to move on from the basic Epidemiology, hence the title. However, I found it a bit pricy so decided to get a second hand book. Well almost 4 weeks after ordering the book through Amazon, it arrived. Apparently someone at Amazon wants me to get into "Volcanology" because this is the book that arrived! How can one confuse Volcanology with Epidemiology? I mean, really! So I bought a new "Epidemiology Beyond the Basics" from one of Amazon's rivals and it arrived within a few days. NEVER AGAIN am I purchasing books from Amazon!!!!
Excellent service. This is an excellent reference book on Epidemiology and can also be used as Text book for Master's level classes.
Epidemiology: Beyong the Basics The first thing one notices is that the authors continuously cite Gordis as a reference; one might've just purchased Gordis instead of this book. From a reductionist point of view, everything contained in Szklo and Nieto is almost also the same as everything contained in Gordis, except for the illustrations (which are not that great in Gordis, either). However, one thing that is missing in Gordis, but present in this book, are the algebraic derivations of many measurement of association equations (i.e., relative risk, odds ratios, attributable risk, etc.). Szklo and Nieto also dedicate more time in describing various aspects of different epidemiological studies, such as in the selection of cases and controls, their related measurements of association, and relevant examples from the literature or current studies. In addition, the chapters are organized rather dryly, similar to a calculus text book (i.e, Chapter 4, Section 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.1.1.1, etc.), though that may just be the reason why this book is recommended for the more "serious" intermediate epidemiology student.
Perfect purchase I got my order in perfect condition and right on time as stated by the seller. The book also had a transparent wrap which I suppose was placed by the seller and will help in preserving the covers for a long time!
Poorly written, confusing I am astounded at the good reviews of this textbook. The authors jump from topic to topic in a non-systematic way. The writing is filled with overlong sentences, semicolons, and dependent clauses, all of which tend to confuse rather than clarify. I am an MD and am studying in an MPH progam in a second semester advanced epidemiology course with this book as a required text. It is possible to get through this book with substantial effort. The authors could stand to take a course themselves in academic writing.
