An essential resource Easily the best book on this topic: extensively researched, beautifully written and full of revealing anecdotes. My only gripe is that it sometimes makes historical claims that are too sweeping, flattening the nineteenth century. A nice supplement in this regard is Allison Lockwood's _Passionate Pilgrims_. | ||
