Product Description
This best selling book has been thoroughly updated to reflect a current and in-depth look at the field of family therapy. It retains its unique approach of leading the reader developmentally from understanding how families function to using therapeutic techniques that will help them change. Extremely organized and well written, this edition offers comprehensive coverage of all major theories of family therapy as well as the latest information about associations dedicated to promoting family therapy and means by which therapists can best assist families in entering and being successful in treatment. A popular four-part format organizes content in a logical, developmental format: 1) Understanding Families, 2) Therapeutic Approaches to Working with Families, 3) Special Populations in Family Therapy, and 4) Professional Issues and Research in Family Therapy. For individuals with either a personal or professional interest in marriage and family counseling.

Reviews

Informative, but...
Well-structured book and very informative, but very poorly written. This is a set text for a class I am taking in graduate school for my doctorate in clinical psychology.

The author uses excessive quotations from other sources - sometimes one wonders if this author thinks critically about anything he writes. Paragraphs are often fragmented; for example the end of this paragraph on page 339 (4th ed): "The behaviours that go with substance abuse or dependence permeate and penetrate into other relationships and impact the actions of everyone who comes in contact with the person who has the disorder. 'Estimates of the economic costs of mental and substance abuse disorders in the United States are in excess of $200 billion per year' (Evans et al., 2005, p.621'" (end of paragraph). Not only does this second sentence seem inappropriate following the first, the author has already mentioned costs to the economy 3 times in the past two pages. Further, the author frequently uses rather (may I say) useless 'filler' statements. For example, the first statement in the above-mentioned paragraph is one which a graduate student would already be expected to be aware of. May I also point out that this textbook is rather America-centric and practically ignores data from international communities.

Recommended for undergraduate American students, not recommended for either American or non-American graduate students.

returned book
Not much to say, I returned both books because you were higher in price than another source. Also, I got two books because you gave me no indication that the purchase was completed. You should review your internet ordering methods. I clicked one button ordering and never knew if it had taken or not, so I did it again, therefore, getting two books. Then I found a cheaper source and returned your books. Fix the thing and I will order again. I have ordered several books in the past, so I'm not new to this, just new to bad service by you prople and your method of one click ordering.

Very Informative!
This book was a requirement for a Marriage and Family Counseling class. It is written very well and is a very easy read compared to many text books I've had to read. Gladding is always a good choicein textbooks!
